‘As If It Were a Cherry’ – Poetry and creativity in childhood

Thursday, September 18, 2025 - University of Helsinki - 12:00 PM

Kolibrí Festivaali 2025 Guest Artist, Mar Benegas (ES), will speak about the importance of poetry in early childhood – and why it’s essential to make it accessible to children.

As Benegas herself puts it: “Poetry is a little music box that rocks us to sleep, a pair of eyes that transforms the world, and the voice and playfulness of childhood. It’s the birdsong and the heartbeat. The rhythm that flows through the world and sinks its roots into timeless times. To play, to sing, to feel, to look at the world with wonder: every age has its poem, and every poem has a tiny heart that makes it sing”.

This masterclass is ideal for students of Hispanic Studies, nursery and primary school teachers, as well as all kinds of educators and parents who want to spark a love of poetry in children.

Mar Benegas’ participation in Kolibrí Festivaali is thanks to the collaboration of Dirección General del Libro, del Cómic y de la Lectura of the Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes of Spain, University of Helsinki.
