Jarna Piippo holds a PhD from the University of Helsinki with a major in Spanish and Portuguese Philology and Finnish Language. Her thesis examined Mother Tongue (heritage language) tuition in basic education. She has taught Ibero-Romance languages and literatures since 1988 principally at the University of Helsinki, as well as Portuguese as a Mother Tongue to school children and Finnish to immigrants. She also works as a translator and an interpreter, and has published textbooks and articles especially on plurilingualism and language education. Jarna’s husband is from Angola and speaks Portuguese with their four 15‒25-year-old children.
